Dutch invention

The Lumina A-IOL (accommodating intraocular lens) was designed by Akkolens Clinical, a Dutch ophthalmic company. Our mission is to provide natural, sharp vision for all distances to people with cataracts, nearsightedness, farsightedness or presbyopia. Akkolens Clinical was founded in 2006 by Michiel Rombach, PhD, MBA, the inventor of the innovative Lumina.

1949
Sir Harold Ridley implants the first intraocular lens (IOL).
2006
Michiel Rombach, PhD, MBA, founds Akkolens Clinical to further develop his Lumina artificial lens.
2009
Prof. Jorge AliĆ³ implants the first Lumina A-IOL.
2016
First scientific publication in the American Journal of Ophthalmology: Visual outcomes and accommodative response of the Lumina IOL.
2021
CE registration of Lumina A-IOL.
2022
Introduction of the Lumina A-IOL in Europe.
